The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) has inducted 46 graduates of its Bachelor of Nursing Science programme into the nursing profession.
The 7th induction ceremony, held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the College, marked the completion of the graduates’ professional training and their transition into the nursing profession.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Oseni Afisi, urged the new nurses to uphold professionalism, integrity and compassion in the discharge of their duties.
Olatunji-Bello described nursing as a profession that requires more than academic knowledge and technical competence, stressing the importance of empathy, patience and a strong commitment to service.
She told the inductees that their qualifications came with a responsibility to protect lives, promote health and uphold the ethical standards of the profession.
The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr Alhassan, represented by Umar Gambo, also urged the new nurses to pursue continuous professional and academic development.
He encouraged them to remain committed to learning as healthcare practices continue to evolve, while maintaining honesty, humility and compassion in their professional relationships.
Gambo further urged the inductees to resist unethical practices and demonstrate the courage to uphold professional standards throughout their careers.
Earlier, the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, congratulated the graduates on completing their training, describing the induction as the culmination of years of academic work and professional preparation.
He urged them to justify the investment made in their education by maintaining high standards of practice and contributing meaningfully to healthcare delivery.
The ceremony also featured goodwill messages from the Chief Medical Director of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, and the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Omowunmi Ekong.
Both speakers encouraged the inductees to remain guided by the ethics and values of nursing as they begin their professional careers.
Outstanding students were also recognised during the ceremony. Fatima Olayinka Adeyemi emerged as the Best Graduating Student, while Temidayo Samuel Lawal received the award for Best Student in the Registered Nurse Examination.
The induction brings to 46 the number of newly trained nurses joining the profession from the latest LASUCOM graduating set, further highlighting the College’s role in training healthcare professionals for Nigeria’s health sector.
