Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026–2027 United States National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th young poet to receive the prestigious national honour and only the second Nigerian-American to hold the title.
The United States Mission Nigeria announced Umemezie’s selection on Friday, describing the young poet as a gifted Nigerian-American voice whose work explores heritage, identity and the complexities of growing up between different cultural worlds.
The recognition places Umemezie among a distinguished group of young literary voices in the United States and provides him with a national platform to use poetry and storytelling to engage wider audiences.
Poetry explores identity and heritage
According to the United States Mission Nigeria, Umemezie’s poetry reflects the richness of his experiences as a Nigerian-American while examining questions surrounding culture, identity and belonging.
His work connects personal experiences with broader questions about what it means to grow up between different cultural environments.

Second Nigerian-American to receive honour
Umemezie follows in the footsteps of Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to be named US National Youth Poet Laureate in 2023.
