The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has commended Babcock University, Ogun State, for its sustained support for Nigeria’s national youth table tennis teams, describing the institution’s contribution as important to the development of young athletes and the country’s sports education ecosystem.
The commendation followed the university’s decision to provide facilities and other support for members of the national youth teams as they prepare for major international competitions.
The partnership has seen Babcock University host a national training camp involving young players preparing for international competitions, providing them with access to sporting facilities, accommodation, nutrition, transportation and medical support.
The NTTF had earlier disclosed that 35 players aged between nine and 19, comprising 18 girls and 17 boys, trained at the university ahead of the Africa Hopes Week and Challenge, the West African Regional Championships and the African Youth Championships.
The federation’s President, Adesoji Tayo, previously described Babcock as an ideal environment for youth development because of its facilities and relatively calm campus environment, noting that the university had provided the players with good accommodation, feeding and medical attention during the training period.
Tayo also disclosed that the NTTF and Babcock University had reached an understanding to make the institution a permanent training base for Nigeria’s national table tennis teams, strengthening the link between higher education and elite sports development.
The collaboration is significant because it places a university environment at the centre of the preparation of young athletes for international competitions. Beyond sporting facilities, the university setting provides an opportunity to promote the development of athletes who must balance sporting careers with education.
Babcock University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Afolarin Ojewole, had said the institution regarded sports as part of the holistic development of young people, stressing that physical activity could contribute to discipline, determination, teamwork and leadership.
He noted that the university’s philosophy was centred on developing the heart, head and hands, with sports forming part of its broader approach to producing well-rounded individuals.
The partnership also comes against the background of efforts by the NTTF to strengthen Nigeria’s youth development pipeline. The federation has continued to emphasise the need for sustained training, quality coaching and access to appropriate equipment if young Nigerian players are to compete successfully at international level.
Earlier in the year, the NTTF also received equipment support from China-based Wang Kai Table Tennis, including rubbers, blades and balls, with the federation stressing that adequate equipment remains essential to grassroots player development.
The federation has subsequently used Babcock’s facilities to prepare players selected for continental and regional competitions, with NTTF officials expressing confidence that the training environment would help young athletes improve their technical abilities and international competitiveness.
For Babcock University, the collaboration further demonstrates how higher education institutions can contribute to national development beyond conventional academic activities by supporting sports, talent development and youth empowerment.
The partnership also provides an example of how universities, professional sporting bodies and other institutions can work together to create structured pathways through which young people can pursue both education and competitive sporting careers.
As Nigeria seeks to develop a sustainable pipeline of sporting talent, continued university support could provide young athletes with access to quality training environments while keeping education at the centre of their development.
The NTTF’s recognition of Babcock University therefore highlights a broader role for Nigerian universities in national sports development, particularly in creating environments where young talents can train, compete and continue their education without having to choose one pathway at the expense of the other.
