Google has introduced a new initiative offering eligible students in Nigerian higher institutions 12 months of free access to Google AI Plus, as part of efforts to expand access to artificial intelligence tools for learning, research and digital skills development.
The initiative, known as the Gemini Student Offer, is valued at ₦92,400 per student and is available to students aged 18 and above enrolled in accredited universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria. Students who benefited from the offer during the previous academic year can also renew their access after re-verifying their student status.
Nigeria is among 27 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa participating in the initiative, which is being introduced ahead of the new academic session.
Through the free subscription, students will gain access to advanced artificial intelligence tools through the Gemini app, including higher usage limits, Gemini Omni, Gemini Live for real-time voice interactions, Deep Research for academic projects, custom practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage.
The initiative is particularly significant for students because it extends the use of AI beyond general information searches to academic research, revision, skills development and personalised learning.
Google’s Director for West and East Africa, Olumide Balogun, said the initiative was aimed at reducing financial barriers that could prevent Nigerian students from benefiting from emerging AI technologies.
Balogun said artificial intelligence represented a major technological shift and could provide Nigeria, with its young and entrepreneurial population, with an opportunity to accelerate its development.
He added that the 12-month offer was intended to enable Nigerian students to understand complex subjects, acquire digital skills and improve their ability to compete in the global economy.
One of the major educational features of the initiative is Guided Learning, which is designed to make Gemini function more like an academic tutor than an answer-generating tool.
Rather than simply providing answers to students, the system uses hints and guiding questions to help learners understand concepts and work through academic problems.
Google said a Google DeepMind study involving 1,763 students in West African schools found that students using Guided Learning recorded learning gains equivalent to between 1.2 and 1.7 years over an eight-week period.
The company also reported that more than 90 per cent of interactions in the study focused on understanding concepts, while only two per cent resulted in direct solutions.
The technology can also be integrated into Google Classroom, allowing lecturers to retain Gemini’s Guided Learning mode while ensuring that student and classroom data are not used to train Google’s AI models.
Students will further have access to Gemini Study Notebooks, which can transform lecture notes and other course materials into quizzes and lesson plans.
Other educational features include Gemini Live for interactive discussions, Deep Research for academic investigations, interactive 3D visualisations and Google Lens Homework Helper, which can assist with equations and diagrams.
The development comes as artificial intelligence continues to change how students access information, conduct research and acquire new skills.
For Nigerian higher education, the availability of advanced AI tools at no cost could provide students with additional support in areas such as academic writing, revision, research planning, data interpretation, problem-solving and digital learning.
It also creates an opportunity for students to develop familiarity with AI technologies that are increasingly being adopted across professional sectors.
However, the educational value of such tools will depend largely on how students and institutions use them. The emphasis on Guided Learning suggests an attempt to promote AI-assisted learning rather than replacing students’ independent thinking or encouraging the submission of AI-generated work as original academic output.
The initiative could also help narrow the digital divide by giving students who may not otherwise be able to afford premium AI services access to tools that support academic and professional development.
Eligible students can verify their enrolment through SheerID before claiming the 12-month subscription through Google’s student offer platform.
With Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education increasingly responding to the demands of digital transformation, the initiative represents another opportunity for students to integrate artificial intelligence into their learning while developing skills relevant to the future workplace.
The broader significance lies in moving students from simply consuming AI-generated information to learning how to question, evaluate, apply and responsibly use AI in academic and professional settings.
