Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos State, has commenced preparations for the 2026/2027 academic session with an orientation programme for University Hall Porters, focusing on student safety, welfare, discipline, hygiene and effective residential management.
The programme, organised by the university’s Student Affairs Unit, was held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the University Convocation Hall as part of measures to prepare personnel responsible for supporting students in the institution’s halls of residence ahead of their return for the new academic session.
The orientation was facilitated by the Student Affairs Unit under the leadership of the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ngozi Chikere, and was designed to ensure that Hall Porters have a clear understanding of their responsibilities, institutional expectations and the standards required for effective service delivery.
A major focus of the programme was the responsibility of Hall Porters in maintaining a safe and secure residential environment for students.
With Porters serving as an important point of contact within the university halls, the orientation stressed the need for vigilance and prompt attention to issues that could affect students’ safety or disrupt peaceful residential life.
The Porters were reminded that effective hall management goes beyond routine administrative duties, requiring them to contribute to an orderly, supportive and conducive environment where students can live and pursue their academic activities without unnecessary disruption.
The programme also addressed the university’s dress codes and institutional standards, with participants sensitised to the regulations guiding appearance and conduct within the university community.
Discussions further covered the codes of conduct applicable to staff and students, reinforcing the need for Hall Porters to understand institutional regulations and apply them appropriately while carrying out their duties.
Participants were encouraged to maintain appropriate boundaries in their interactions with students while remaining approachable and responsive to legitimate concerns arising within the halls of residence.
The session highlighted the importance of maintaining clean and healthy residential spaces, particularly because students spend substantial periods of their university experience within the halls.
The Porters were encouraged to promote proper hygiene practices and contribute to the maintenance of an environment that supports students’ health and general wellbeing.
Participants were sensitised on appropriate procedures for handling issues involving students, documenting or reporting incidents when necessary and communicating promptly with the Student Affairs Unit and other relevant university authorities.
The emphasis on proper reporting was aimed at ensuring that concerns arising within the halls are channelled through appropriate institutional structures rather than being ignored or handled outside established procedures.
Speaking during the programme, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ngozi Chikere, underscored the importance of the Porters’ responsibilities to the university’s student-centred approach.
She encouraged the Porters to remain professional, vigilant, approachable and responsive while carrying out their duties, stressing the need for them to recognise their role in creating a positive residential experience for students.
Chikere also highlighted the importance of collaboration in the effective management of the university halls.
According to her, successful residential administration requires cooperation among Hall Porters, students, the Student Affairs Unit and other relevant university authorities.
Such cooperation, she indicated, is important for identifying challenges early, responding appropriately to incidents and maintaining the standards expected within the university’s residential facilities.
The orientation therefore provided an opportunity for the university to reinforce expectations before students return, while also giving the Porters an avenue to clarify areas of responsibility that could arise during the academic session.
The interactive session at the conclusion of the programme allowed participants to ask questions and seek clarification on issues relating to their duties, student relations, incident reporting and the general management of the university halls.
