Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, is scheduled to inaugurate newly remodelled facilities at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The facilities, developed by the university’s Centre for Digital Humanities (CEDHUL), comprise a Learning Hub and Workstation and a Postgraduate Lecture Room. They are designed to support teaching, research and collaboration in Digital Humanities.
The inauguration will take place at the centre’s facilities in Suites B302 and B303, Faculty of Arts. The spaces will support the centre’s postgraduate programmes, including the Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy.
Founded in 2019, CEDHUL brings humanities scholarship together with digital technologies. Its research areas include digital archiving, text and data analysis, computational linguistics and artificial intelligence.
The centre’s founding director, Professor Babatunde Ope-Davies, said the project represented more than the opening of physical facilities. He described it as an opportunity to advance humanities scholarship by combining African knowledge systems with contemporary digital tools.
According to him, the facilities will provide an environment where African knowledge can be preserved, interpreted and communicated using technologies available to researchers.
Ope-Davies also acknowledged the contributions of the university and its partners in Nigeria and abroad towards the development of the facilities.
The Learning Hub and Workstation is expected to support research involving digital archives, computational methods and data, while the lecture room will provide a technology-enabled learning space for postgraduate students.
The centre’s work includes the application of digital methods to the study and preservation of African languages, cultures, histories and intellectual traditions.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, and other principal officers of the university are expected to attend the inauguration, alongside academics, students, partners, members of the diplomatic community and the media.
