The Vice Chancellor of Salem University, Lokoja, Professor Alewo Akubo, has called on the Federal Government to pay more attention to private universities in order to achieve sustainable education in Nigeria. He made these remarks during a press conference ahead of the institution’s 6th Convocation Ceremony, where graduates from the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years will be honored.
Professor Akubo highlighted the importance of private universities in the nation’s education system, emphasizing that they should receive the same level of support from the government as public universities. He specifically mentioned the need for funding assistance from TETFund to help in the growth and development of private universities.
The Vice Chancellor noted that private universities play a vital role in shaping the future of education in Nigeria and are more cost-effective than public universities. He urged the Federal Government to consider special measures to support private universities, as this would contribute significantly to the improvement of the education sector in the country.
In terms of achievements, Professor Akubo mentioned that Salem University will be graduating 41 first-class students along with 499 graduates from various colleges. Additionally, he announced that a convocation lecture will be delivered by Professor Sam Egwu, a renowned Professor of political economy, on the 27th of November, 2024.
Overall, Professor Akubo underlined the importance of recognizing and supporting private universities in Nigeria for the overall development of the education system in the country.
