The Anambra State government has issued a directive authorizing secondary school principals and teachers to confiscate mobile phones from students in a bid to reduce distractions and enhance academic performance.
The announcement was made by Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, during her address at the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka on Friday. Ikediugwu explained that the measure aims to restore discipline and help students focus on their academic work.
Ikediugwu pointed out that the increasing use of mobile phones during school hours has become a major distraction to students’ studies. “The growing distraction caused by mobile phones in classrooms is affecting students’ ability to concentrate. As part of our efforts to address this, I am authorizing principals and teachers to confiscate phones from students who bring them to school,” she stated.
The government’s efforts to improve education were further highlighted, with Ikediugwu noting that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has prioritized investments in education.
“Governor Soludo’s administration has made significant investments in education with a focus on academic excellence and discipline among students,” she added.
In addition to the academic focus, Ikediugwu spoke about the importance of preserving Igbo culture. She stressed the need for continued education on Igbo values and traditions to ensure they are passed down to future generations. “It is important to educate students on the values and norms of Ndigbo to preserve the heritage of the Igbo people,” she said.
The event, which showcased various aspects of Igbo culture, including traditional music, dance, and cuisine, aimed to inspire students to appreciate and uphold their cultural heritage.
