The newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, is preparing to open its doors to pioneer students in September 2025, according to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Aribisala. The VC made this announcement during a media briefing on Monday, where he outlined the institution’s vision and readiness to commence academic activities.
“Admission for the first academic calendar will begin in September this year in four different faculties – Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences; Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences; Faculty of Computer and Information Technology with courses like Mechatronics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybercrime, Security and Information Technology,” Aribisala revealed.
The university, established on February 20, 2025, by the Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, aims to produce competent graduates equipped with innovative and problem-solving skills. The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the institution would not compromise on staff quality and would follow strict recruitment protocols.
“University is a community of scholars,” he stated. “The management will prioritise the recruitment of competent academic and non-academic staff who have a passion for academic research works that would win grants, attract global attention, be highly respectful, neat and always ready to assist students and anyone, when the need arises.”
Aribisala said the institution was fully aware of the need to maintain high standards from inception. “This school cannot employ or engage workers who would be idle or those who will bring the name of the school to disrepute. The university is to stand as a source of building human resources for the advancement of societal development,” he said.
According to the VC, all staff recruitment and administrative procedures would adhere strictly to the principles of federal character, ensuring fairness, diversity, and a high level of professionalism across all departments. “Advertisement and every process would be in line with the federal character principles to ensure that only staff members with a passion for excellence are engaged,” he added.
Aribisala also reiterated that research would be central to the university’s mission. “Research work would be prioritised to ensure that the university turns out students who will be job creators and not job seekers. We are passionate about building a university that is ICT driven, transparent and with integrity,” he noted.
While addressing questions on infrastructure readiness, the VC confirmed that the university’s digital platforms, including its official website, were in the final stages of development to facilitate access to admission and academic information. “Work is almost completed on the university’s website to ease access to relevant information concerning the institution,” he explained.
On amenities, Professor Aribisala disclosed that the institution had partnered with several organizations and individuals to provide basic infrastructure. “Measures have been put in place to ensure potable water and stable electricity supply across the university community through partnership with various groups, organisations and individuals, without relying solely on electricity distribution companies,” he stated.
Expressing appreciation to key stakeholders, Aribisala acknowledged the support of the host community and political leaders. “All the facilities that we are using now were donated by the community, and I sincerely appreciate our Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; the Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Adeola Ajakaye; and the good people of Iyin Ekiti for their sense of hospitality, which has made commencement of the academic programme easy,” he concluded.
