The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, over the mishandling of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a statement issued on Thursday by the association’s National PRO, Samson Adeyemi, NANS expressed deep dissatisfaction with JAMB’s handling of the exam after the board admitted to errors that marred the results of thousands of candidates.
TheNigeriaEducationNews reported earlier this week that Prof. Oloyede, in a press conference in Abuja, apologised to affected candidates, acknowledging a technical fault that compromised the exam’s integrity. He assured that over 379,000 candidates would be allowed to retake the examination at no cost.
However, NANS dismissed the explanation as insufficient, citing a recent tragedy in Ikorodu, Lagos, where a female candidate reportedly took her own life due to her UTME result. The association held JAMB responsible for the distress caused to students.
“We are outraged by JAMB’s recklessness, which has subjected thousands of students to psychological trauma and led to the irreversible loss of a young life,” Adeyemi stated. He referred to the errors as “an institutional disgrace,” especially since they affected several states, including Lagos and parts of the South-East.
“This goes beyond a technical error — it is administrative incompetence that has shattered the dreams of many students,” he said, insisting the matter must not be overlooked.
NANS called for Prof. Oloyede’s resignation, stating that the current leadership has lost the moral authority to continue overseeing such a crucial national task. The student body also demanded that JAMB provide financial and psychological support to the grieving family in Lagos and ensure a transparent resit process for all affected candidates.
Furthermore, NANS urged the Federal Government to implement urgent reforms in JAMB and other education agencies to prevent a recurrence of such errors.
