As the 2025 admission season gathers momentum, aspirants of Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, are advised to take note of the latest admission requirements and departmental cut-off marks to better prepare and align with the university’s expectations. IMSU has maintained a structured process for both UTME and Direct Entry candidates, with emphasis on academic merit, correct subject combinations, and participation in its screening exercise.
To be eligible for admission into any course at IMSU, candidates must possess at least five (5) O’Level credits in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings. “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME score must not be less than 160, although specific courses may demand higher scores,” an admissions officer at IMSU explained.
Participation in IMSU’s post-UTME screening exercise is mandatory. Candidates are also required to choose correct UTME subject combinations that correspond to their intended course of study. “It is not enough to have high scores; if your subject combination is wrong, your admission may be disqualified,” the officer warned.
For Medicine and Surgery, candidates must score at least 250 in the UTME and have credits in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, and Mathematics. “The UTME subjects should be Biology, Chemistry, and Physics,” the university emphasized. This course remains one of the most competitive in IMSU.
Law aspirants are expected to score a minimum of 200 in their UTME and have O’Level credits in English, Literature-in-English, and three other Arts or Social Science subjects. “The relevant UTME subjects include English, Literature-in-English, and any two Arts or Social Science subjects,” the official said.
Accounting requires at least 180 in the UTME, with credits in Mathematics, English, Economics, and two other commerce-related subjects. For Microbiology, aspirants must also score a minimum of 180 and have credits in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, and Mathematics, with UTME subjects in Biology, Chemistry, and either Physics or Mathematics.
For Direct Entry (DE) candidates, the O’Level requirements remain the same, but additional qualifications such as A’ Level/IJMB passes in two relevant subjects, or an Upper Credit in National Diploma (ND) or Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), are required. DE candidates must also sit for IMSU’s DE screening. “While DE admissions are considered, priority is typically given to UTME applicants,” a university staff member clarified.
Finally, aspirants should be aware that departmental cutoff marks are subject to annual changes based on candidate performance and institutional capacity. IMSU has urged candidates to aim above the minimum and frequently check the school’s official portal for updates. “Post-UTME performance plays a major role in determining final admission. Candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly and confirm course-specific details before applying,” the source concluded.
