Outrage has trailed the killing of a 300-level Computer Science student of the University of Port Harcourt, Godwin Francis Akpakpan, who was reportedly shot dead during a disputed security operation off campus in Rivers State.
The incident, which has sparked condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), is said to have occurred during an altercation between security operatives, reportedly involving police officers and unidentified men in military uniform.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, described Akpakpan’s death as a tragic and painful loss to the institution. He noted that the incident took place outside the university premises and conveyed the management’s condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues and the student body.
While details of the incident remain sketchy, NANS has labelled the killing as an alleged extrajudicial execution and demanded a thorough and transparent investigation.
According to the Rivers State Joint Campus Council of NANS, the late student was arrested on April 16, 2024, during a stop and search operation by individuals dressed in police uniforms. He was later shot dead in what the student body described as a security clash involving both police and suspected military personnel.
Chairman of the NANS JCC, Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, expressed concern that no security agency has taken responsibility for the shooting.
“This silence is unacceptable and provocative,” he said. “We demand immediate answers. If the authorities fail to act swiftly, we will be left with no option but to mobilise and shut down academic activities across the state.”
He maintained that the student community would not back down until justice is served, stressing that the safety of students must not be compromised.
In its response, the UNIPORT management said it was working closely with security agencies to uncover the facts of the case and ensure accountability.
“We are committed to supporting every lawful effort to identify those responsible and ensure justice is done,” the university’s statement read.
The institution also urged students and members of the university community to remain calm and law abiding while investigations continue, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of its students and staff.
