Rotary International, District 9112, has inducted secondary school students across Lagos as representatives for the district. The event, held last week, marked a new chapter in youth engagement and development, as 12 student representatives from 10 schools were inaugurated as board members for the 2024/2025 Rotary Year.
The newly elected team is led by District Interact Representative, Master Adikwu Oloche from Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos Island, who will be supported by Miss Adeniran Ifeoluwa from Evans Adelaja Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Temple, Bariga, Lagos. Other key executive members include Miss Bassey Unwana of Gbara Community High School as Secretary, Akiola Summayyah of Kuramo Senior College as Treasurer, and Master Bmitosahi Yaqub of Kings’ College as Public Image Officer. Additional leadership roles include Membership Director Miss Oyeyemi Oluwademilade from CMS Girls Secondary School and Club Administrator Miss Musiliu Mariam from the Federal Science and Technical College.
Speaking at the event, District Interact Committee Chairperson and past President Yetunde Dimowo emphasized the significance of the initiative in grooming future leaders. “Rotary is committed to preparing young people for leadership by teaching them the value of service, integrity, and social impact. Through various meaningful projects, we equip them with the skills necessary to positively transform their environment,” she stated.
Dimowo highlighted that about 60 schools are involved in the initiative, underscoring Rotary’s dedication to youth empowerment. She urged the newly inducted executives to embrace their roles with commitment and a sense of responsibility, assuring them of ongoing mentorship and supervision throughout their tenure.
This induction program aligns with global efforts to instill leadership qualities in young individuals. Research shows that early exposure to leadership and community service fosters civic engagement and enhances problem-solving skills among students. By encouraging secondary school students to participate in structured leadership programs, Rotary is not only shaping future professionals but also nurturing a culture of active citizenship.
Education experts have often emphasized that beyond academic excellence, character development and leadership training play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded individuals. The newly inducted board members will have the opportunity to initiate and execute impactful projects within their schools and communities, ranging from environmental sustainability efforts to educational outreach and health initiatives.
Dimowo expressed appreciation for the unwavering support of school administrators in making the project a success. “The collaboration between Rotary and educational institutions is a testament to our shared vision of creating responsible and service-oriented future leaders,” she remarked. She assured stakeholders that Rotary will continue to provide the necessary support to facilitate impactful projects and ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
As the new executive board embarks on their leadership journey, the focus remains on capacity building, service-driven projects, and fostering a mindset of responsibility and innovation. Rotary International, District 9112, has once again reaffirmed its role as a formidable force in youth empowerment, demonstrating that leadership begins at the grassroots level.
