Saheed Ahmed, a final-year student of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, has been named the World’s Best Veterinary Student by the World Veterinary Association (WVA). The announcement was made by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) through its official social media platforms.
Mr Ahmed, who previously served as the 4th National President of the International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA), Nigeria, and Public Relations Coordinator of the same association in 2023, was recognised for his academic excellence, leadership experience, and commitment to community service.
The award includes a €5,000 cash prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the 2025 World Veterinary Congress, scheduled to hold in Washington D.C., United States.
Currently serving as President-elect of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students at the University of Ibadan, Mr Ahmed has demonstrated a consistent interest in global health issues. His work focuses on antimicrobial resistance, public health, and the One Health approach, particularly the link between human, animal, and environmental health.
Mr Ahmed previously obtained a National Diploma in Fisheries Technology with distinction from the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan, before proceeding to the University of Ibadan for his veterinary studies.
He is also known for his research in epidemiology and emerging zoonotic diseases, with an emphasis on their impact on global health systems. A vocal advocate for health equity, Mr Ahmed believes that every individual deserves the right to a healthy and dignified life and that all members of society have a role to play in advancing social justice through health initiatives.
The recognition by the World Veterinary Association marks a significant milestone not just for Mr Ahmed, but for Nigeria’s veterinary education system and its global visibility.
