The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has once again taken the spotlight in Nigeria’s academic and research community with the approval of a groundbreaking project by the National Research Fund (NRF) of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The research, spearheaded by Dr. Toyin Segun Onayinka, a renowned new media specialist in FUOYE’s Department of Mass Communication, is aimed at creating Naija Falsehood Buster, a national hub to combat fake news and misinformation.
This project marks a significant step in the fight against the rising tide of misinformation that threatens social stability, political harmony, and national security. By leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and strategic media monitoring, the platform will work to detect, track, and reduce the spread of harmful narratives. The focus is on safeguarding national cohesion while promoting fact-based public discourse.
Dr. Onayinka will lead a team of highly skilled researchers drawn from different disciplines and universities across Nigeria. The group includes Dr. Jacob Kehinde Opele and Dr. Lawrence Bunmi Adewole from FUOYE, Dr. Chioma Ifeoma Agbasimelo from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and Dr. Blessing Vou Dakat from the University of Jos. Also on the team is Mrs. Grace Oluwakemi Onipede, a junior researcher who will bring additional expertise to the innovative project.
The researchers will design and deploy an AI-powered system that integrates data analytics, content verification tools, and strategic media engagement to fight fake news at the source. The platform will also host a national database of influential on-air personalities and social media influencers, allowing for targeted interventions and collaborations to curb misinformation.
One of the standout features of Naija Falsehood Buster is its proactive approach to false information. Rather than only reacting to harmful content, the system will actively monitor trending topics across multiple media platforms, enabling rapid response before misinformation gains traction.
The approval of this project under the 2024 NRF funding round speaks to TETFund’s increasing commitment to funding research that directly addresses Nigeria’s most urgent social, political, and economic challenges. Out of the numerous applications submitted nationwide, this FUOYE-led proposal was among the 158 research projects that met the rigorous selection criteria.
For FUOYE, this achievement reinforces its growing reputation as a hub of academic excellence and problem-driven innovation. In recent years, the institution has invested heavily in research projects that have direct impact on the Nigerian society, ranging from technological innovation to socio-political problem-solving initiatives.
The issue of fake news is not peculiar to Nigeria, but its local implications are particularly severe. False narratives have been known to exacerbate ethnic tensions, influence electoral outcomes, and incite violence. The Naija Falsehood Buster project seeks to provide a structured and data-driven response to these threats.
Experts believe that incorporating AI into the fight against fake news offers Nigeria a strategic advantage. AI-powered detection can identify suspicious content patterns faster than human moderators, while a verified influencer database can help in mobilizing credible voices to counter harmful narratives.
The multidisciplinary nature of the research team is another strength of the project. With expertise spanning mass communication, information technology, sociology, and political science, the initiative is set to produce robust findings and sustainable solutions that can be adopted nationwide.
FUOYE’s Vice-Chancellor has praised the development, describing it as another milestone in the university’s mission to contribute actively to national development. He emphasized that the university would continue to support innovative research ideas that address Nigeria’s critical challenges in the digital age.
The approval of the Naija Falsehood Buster project also sends a strong message to other higher institutions: that cutting-edge, socially relevant research can secure not only funding but also national and international recognition.
As the team begins work on the project, stakeholders across government, academia, and the media will be watching closely to see how the initiative unfolds. The hope is that it will set a precedent for evidence-based policymaking and inspire further technological solutions to the country’s pressing issues.
Ultimately, the success of this project could redefine Nigeria’s approach to information management in the digital era, ensuring that truth has a fighting chance in a world increasingly crowded with misinformation. For FUOYE and its team of researchers, the journey to restoring trust in information has just begun.
