Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has disclosed that the Federal Government has disbursed education loans to 8,971 students in federal universities across the North-West zone under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This initiative is part of the administration’s efforts to improve access to tertiary education and ease the financial burden on students from low- and middle-income families.
Idris made this known in Kano on Tuesday during the presentation of the mid-term performance report of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
He said Bayero University, Kano (BUK), recorded the highest number of beneficiaries under the scheme nationwide.
A breakdown of the disbursements shows that the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, received N409 million; Federal University, Dutse, got N593 million; while Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), received N578 million.
Idris, who was represented by the Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kano, Rabiu Ado, described the loan scheme as a key part of the government’s broader education reform agenda in the region.
He noted that the Federal Government recently upgraded the Federal College of Education (FCE), Kano, to a University of Education and converted the Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, into the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kano.
The minister said the reforms reflect the administration’s commitment to repositioning the education sector and creating opportunities for academic advancement and innovation across the North-West.
