UNIZIK Bans “Signing Out” Celebration for Final Year Students Over Security Concerns

The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has officially announced the indefinite ban of all “signing out” activities traditionally carried out by final year students after their last examinations. The decision, according to the University authorities, takes effect immediately and applies across all faculties, departments, and campuses of the institution.

In a statement released by the University, Management explained that the ban became necessary due to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and serious disruptions to the normal academic environment that had been linked to the practice. “Signing out,” which involves students wearing customized shirts signed by friends and colleagues to mark the completion of their studies, has in recent years evolved into elaborate gatherings often accompanied by rowdiness, loud music, and, in some cases, confrontations.

The University lamented that what began as a simple gesture of celebration has now grown into activities that compromise security on campus. Unauthorized individuals, according to Management, frequently take advantage of the events to gain access to the University premises. Their presence, the statement added, poses serious threats to the safety of students, staff, and the wider campus community.

The statement read in part: “Effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the University premises. This decision is in response to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption of normal University activities associated with these events.”

To underscore the seriousness of the matter, the University further declared that any student found to be involved in organizing or participating in such activities would face strict disciplinary action. These sanctions, Management said, could include suspension, rustication, or other measures deemed appropriate by the disciplinary committee.

UNIZIK also issued a strong warning to outsiders who may attempt to gain access to the campus to participate in “signing out” activities. Such individuals, the statement revealed, risk being arrested and prosecuted for disorderly conduct, especially where their actions are seen to have caused a breach of peace within the University.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions among the student community. While some students acknowledge that the celebrations often become unruly, others argue that banning the practice outright deprives graduating students of an important cultural moment in their academic journey. However, Management insists that the safety of the campus environment takes precedence over tradition.

In justifying the policy, University authorities emphasized their constitutional obligation to maintain law and order within the institution. They reiterated that safeguarding lives, protecting property, and ensuring the continuity of academic activities without disruption are responsibilities that cannot be compromised under any circumstances.

The statement further urged students to channel their energy into academic pursuits and constructive activities that align with the University’s vision of excellence. Students were also advised to promptly report any form of misconduct or suspicious behavior on campus to the appropriate security units.

Observers note that UNIZIK’s decision mirrors a growing trend among Nigerian universities where administrations are increasingly taking strong measures against disruptive social activities. With heightened concerns about insecurity nationwide, institutions appear more determined to clamp down on practices that could provide openings for violence or unauthorized intrusion.

Despite the ban, University Management hinted that it remains open to constructive dialogue with student leaders about alternative ways to celebrate academic milestones without jeopardizing security and public order. Authorities maintained, however, that such alternatives must be orderly, safe, and reflective of the dignity expected of a citadel of learning.

UNIZIK concluded by reaffirming its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and safety. The Management assured all stakeholders students, staff, and parents that the University will continue to prioritize the well-being of its community while upholding its standards as a respected Nigerian institution of higher learning.
