The University of Ilorin has been listed among Nigerian tertiary institutions selected to benefit from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETFund) massive hostel development projects aimed at addressing the acute shortage of student accommodation across the country.
The intervention forms part of the 2025 Disbursement Guidelines, designed to tackle dilapidated and inadequate hostels in public tertiary institutions. According to TETFund, the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s educational infrastructural development agenda and is expected to provide modern, secure, and conducive living spaces for students.
The projects will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement valued at ₦4 billion. Under the model, investors will contribute 75 percent of the funds, while TETFund will provide the remaining 25 percent on behalf of the benefiting institutions.
Beneficiaries of the intervention include the University of Lagos; Federal University, Lafia; University of Abuja; Benue State University; University of Jos; University of Maiduguri; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; Modibbo Adama University, Yola; Gombe State University; Federal University of Gombe; Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru; Bayero University, Kano; Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; Kaduna Polytechnic; and Federal University, Dutsin-Ma.
Others are Federal University, Ndufu-Alike; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Abia State University, Uturu; University of Port Harcourt; Federal Polytechnic, Oko; University of Benin; University of Calabar; Nigerian Maritime University; Federal Polytechnic, Auchi; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; University of Ibadan; Lagos State University; Tai Solarin University of Education; and Yaba College of Technology.
TETFund explained that the initiative reflects its commitment to student welfare while enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigerian institutions, noting that a conducive living environment is key to academic excellence and overall performance.
Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for including the institution among the beneficiaries.
Speaking through the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor described the intervention as timely, stressing that it would ease the accommodation challenges facing students. He also urged other public and private organizations to emulate the Federal Government by investing in the University’s development.
