Two final-year students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ilorin, have emerged winners of the prestigious Global Morris Animal Foundation Scholarship, each receiving an award worth $5,500.
The beneficiaries are Babalola Karimot Abisola and Idris Nahimah Opeyemi, whose groundbreaking research projects impressed the Foundation’s panel of reviewers. The announcement was conveyed in a notification letter signed by the Level Adviser, Dr. O. A. Ahmed, and made available on Monday, August 11, 2025.
According to the letter, Babalola’s winning entry, titled “Prevalence and Oncogenic Potential of Feline Leukaemia Virus in Domestic Cats in Lagos and Kwara States of Nigeria”, was supervised by Dr. O. B. Daodu. Idris’ research, titled “Molecular Characterisation of S. aureus in Horses in Nigeria: Methicillin and Multidrug Resistance Profile”, was mentored by Dr. O. A. Ahmed and Dr. I. A. Odetokun.
Reacting to the announcement, the Head of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Dr. O. B. Daodu, described the feat as a remarkable achievement for the Faculty.
He commended the awardees for their dedication and innovation, noting that the recognition had brought honour not only to the Faculty but also to the University as a whole.
The Global Morris Animal Foundation Scholarship supports promising veterinary researchers across the world, with a focus on advancing animal health and welfare through scientific studies.
