Chairman of Agboyi Ketu Local Council Development Area, Adetola Abubakar, has distributed 300 free General Certificate of Education (GCE) forms to secondary school students in the area as part of her administration’s effort to expand access to quality education.
Abubakar said the beneficiaries were selected after a rigorous three-day screening exercise to ensure that only eligible students received the forms. She noted that the gesture is part of a broader education-focused agenda of her administration.
“Education is one of the most important pillars of my administration’s eight-point agenda because I believe every child has the right to quality learning. We do not want our students to be left behind. Beyond providing free GCE forms, we will organise coaching classes and follow-up tutoring to ensure they are well prepared for their examinations. Our goal is to put them in the best frame of mind to compete with their peers within and outside Agboyi Ketu,” she said.
Abubakar reiterated her commitment to removing financial barriers that hinder students from achieving academic success. She said the intervention was not only to ease the burden on struggling parents, but also to encourage students to take their studies more seriously.
“This is personal to me. As I always tell the children, they are my children. We will stand by them every step of the way, from obtaining the forms to preparing for the exams and supporting them beyond this stage. What I expect in return is their commitment to study hard and come out with flying colours,” she added.
One of the beneficiaries, Joyce David, described the gesture as life-changing and expressed appreciation for the support.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Agboyi Ketu, Funmilayo Joseph, commended the initiative, describing it as timely.
“It is timely given the hardship facing many parents,” she said.
