A high-level delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nigeria, led by its Chief Representative, Mr. Ishigame Kenji, has paid a courtesy visit to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in Abuja to deepen collaboration on education development.
The visit focused on three key areas: introducing mission members from Tokyo, discussing infrastructural development to support STEM-inclusive schools in Nigeria, and exploring equipment support to strengthen the country’s STEM education capacity.
According to UBEC, the JICA team is scheduled to return on October 7 to present its site survey report and finalize the Minutes of Meeting for a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between JICA, UBEC, and the Nigerian government.
Receiving the delegation, the UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical), Mr. Razaki Olajuwon Akinyemi, and the Deputy Executive Secretary (Services), Mr. Tunde Segun Ajibulu, mni, alongside members of the UBEC management team.
The discussions underscored both parties’ commitment to strengthening partnerships in basic education, particularly in advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning in Nigeria’s public schools.
UBEC described the engagement as part of ongoing reforms to align Nigeria’s education sector with global standards and equip young learners with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.
