The Provost of Ekiti State College of Health Sciences and Technology (COHESTI), Dr. Olufemi Olubamise, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to promote safer roads and enhance emergency response services within the state.
Dr. Olubamise made this known while receiving officials of the FRSC Ijero Division during a courtesy visit to the college’s conference room, where discussions centred on road-safety sensitization, driver training, and partnership opportunities.
The delegation, led by the new FRSC Unit Commander, CRC Ruth K. Akano, included key officers such as RC A. S. Ogundana, DRC Tanimola Adeosun, Special Marshal Chief (Mrs.) Ojo, and the Deputy Unit Coordinator, Hon. Folowosele. Commander Akano explained that the visit was part of the Corps’ renewed commitment to fostering community partnerships and improving safety awareness among institutions in Ijero-Ekiti.
She noted that one of the key objectives of the visit was to sensitize the college’s staff on road-safety regulations and promote a culture of responsible driving within and beyond the campus environment. Akano also proposed a specialized training programme for the college’s drivers, aimed at equipping them with essential driving techniques and knowledge of emergency handling procedures.
In his response, Dr. Olubamise commended the FRSC for its proactive role in promoting safety on Nigerian roads and applauded the idea of targeted driver education. He urged the Corps to integrate their operations with the college’s existing ambulance service, noting that such collaboration would strengthen emergency response capabilities in the region.
The Provost also extended an invitation to FRSC officers to enrol in the college’s paramedic and emergency-response training programmes. He emphasised that building the capacity of safety officers in basic health care and first-aid intervention would further enhance the effectiveness of the Corps’ life-saving missions.
Describing emergency services as an essential component of public health and road safety, Dr. Olubamise pledged the college’s continued support for initiatives aimed at reducing road accidents and fatalities in Ekiti State. He expressed optimism that the partnership would evolve into a long-term alliance beneficial to both the institution and the surrounding communities.
The College Registrar, Mr. Sunday Ayodeji, in his remarks, appreciated the efforts of the FRSC Ijero Division and highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in promoting road safety. He assured the Corps of the college’s commitment to regular staff training, community outreach, and joint awareness campaigns to foster safer road usage.
The meeting also provided a platform for both institutions to explore future collaborations in driver certification, first-aid response, and accident-reduction strategies. According to both parties, the goal is to create a model of institutional partnership that can be replicated across other tertiary institutions in the state.
The engagement concluded with an exchange of gifts, symbolizing mutual respect and the beginning of a renewed working relationship between COHESTI and the FRSC. The exchange underscored both parties’ shared dedication to promoting safety, professionalism, and community service.
Other principal officers of the college who joined the Provost to receive the FRSC officials included the Deputy Provost, Mrs. Iyabo Oladapo; the Bursar, Mr. Kolade Dada; and the Librarian, Mr. Femi Folorunso. The visit was widely praised by attendees as a productive step toward integrating health education with road-safety advocacy in Ekiti State.
