Students of the University of Ilorin have expressed dissatisfaction with the newly introduced transportation system on campus, describing it as stressful and inefficient due to the limited number of shuttle buses and the low capacity of available vehicles.
The new system, which commenced in the 2024/2025 academic session, was introduced by the university management to improve students’ welfare and reduce the high transport fares associated with the previous system.
However, despite the good intentions behind the initiative, many students say the new arrangement has worsened their commuting experience. The limited number of Korope minibuses, which are popular for short distance trips within the campus, has resulted in long queues and delays, especially during peak periods.
Under the new arrangement, students and visitors coming from outside the campus are dropped at the newly established school park, from where they are expected to board Korope buses to their respective departments and hostels. But with the small number of vehicles available, many are often left stranded for extended periods.
One of the students, who spoke to The Nigeria Education News on condition of anonymity, said the situation had made movement within the university increasingly difficult.
“Our school has changed the transport system, and it’s not easy anymore,” the student lamented. “I stood in the queue for more than an hour just to enter the school. We struggle for almost everything now in UNILORIN.”
Another student, who also preferred anonymity, acknowledged that while the new system had reduced transport fares, the stress involved was overwhelming.
“Before, I used to spend ₦800 to and from school,” the student said. “Now, I spend only ₦300, which is good, but the stress is too much.”
Some students also observed that the available buses could not adequately cater to the university’s large population, even though not all students had resumed for the new session.
They called on the university management to increase the number of Korope buses and shuttle vehicles to ease movement and make the transportation system more effective.
