Southwestern University, Nigeria (SWUN), Okun-Owa, Ogun State, has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence its Law degree programme—an achievement the institution describes as a historic step in its ongoing academic expansion. The approval introduces a new Faculty of Law designed to produce highly skilled legal professionals grounded in integrity, competence, and national service.
In a statement issued by the university, the management noted that the newly approved programme marks the beginning of a new era for Southwestern University, strengthening its mission to offer world-class education rooted in innovation, excellence, and character development.
Responding to the development, the Chancellor, Dr. Babatunde Odufuwa, expressed profound gratitude to God and described the approval as the fulfilment of a long-standing vision for the institution. According to him, the Faculty of Law will play a foundational role in the university’s drive to raise a new generation of leaders who will uphold justice, equity, and the rule of law in Nigeria and beyond.
“This approval reflects our dedication to raising a new generation of transformational leaders,” Odufuwa said. “The institution was established to nurture men and women who will stand for justice, equity, and the rule of law. The Faculty of Law represents a key part of that vision.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. M. A. Amusa, also hailed the approval as a testament to the university’s academic resilience and steady progress in infrastructure, human capital, and quality assurance. He noted that the new programme is structured to meet contemporary legal education standards and global best practices.
Prof. Amusa explained that students of the new Law Faculty will benefit from a well-rounded curriculum that integrates legal theory with hands-on professional exposure. “The programme’s structure blends rigorous coursework with research, internships, legal clinics, and partnerships with reputable law firms and judicial institutions,” he said.
He emphasised that the university’s commitment to producing knowledgeable, ethically grounded, and industry-ready graduates guided every stage of the programme’s development.
With the NUC approval now secured, Southwestern University says it is prepared to welcome its pioneer Law students, who will study under a faculty equipped with modern facilities, experienced lecturers, and a curriculum tailored to address Nigeria’s evolving legal landscape.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to delivering education that transforms society, stating that the establishment of the Faculty of Law brings it closer to its vision of becoming a leading centre for legal scholarship and national development.
