Ms Sarah Yusuf, a 31-year-old English and Literature teacher at Wisdom International School of Excellence, Abuja, has been crowned the overall winner of the 11th Maltina Teacher of the Year Awards, taking home N10 million, a trophy, infrastructure projects worth N30 million for her school, and an international capacity development opportunity.
The grand finale, held in Lagos on Friday night, saw Yusuf emerge top among 10 finalists after rigorous evaluation by a panel chaired by Prof. Pat Utomi, cementing her status as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding educators.
Ms Adeola Olufunke Akinsulire of Omole Senior Grammar School, Lagos, was named first runner-up, receiving N5 million, while Mr Chibuzor Amarikwa of Deeper Life High School, Adamawa State, finished as second runner-up with a N3 million prize.
The ceremony also highlighted Union Bank of Nigeria’s commitment to education through its flagship Edu360 initiative, which drives transformative improvements in the nation’s education sector. The programme focuses on building teacher capacity, improving school infrastructure, promoting digital literacy, and expanding access to inclusive learning nationwide.
Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Mrs Olufunmilola Aluko, emphasised the importance of celebrating teachers.
“Education remains at the heart of our operations,” she said. “Through Edu360, we are not just giving; we are building hope where resources are needed most. Celebrating teachers like Ms Yusuf restores dignity to this noble profession and inspires a new generation of educators.”
The Maltina Teacher of the Year Awards form a key part of Union Bank’s long-term Edu360 vision, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, aimed at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
This year’s event drew educators, government officials, and key stakeholders from across the country, underscoring the critical role teachers play in national development despite the daily challenges they face.
