A Professor of Mathematics at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Felix Ilesanmi Alao, has emphasized the need to make mathematics more accessible and friendly to learners. He made this statement while delivering the 188th inaugural lecture of the institution, titled “Mathematics: Myths, Mysteries and Life”.
Professor Alao believes that mathematics is not just about complex equations and symbols, but a vital tool that unlocks the language of commerce and business transactions, giving meaning to science and engineering. He stressed that mathematics is essential in everyday life, citing examples of its applications in budgeting, construction, time management, engineering, and health sciences.
The professor lamented the stigmatization of mathematics as a “mysterious” subject and called on teachers to make it more engaging and interactive. He also urged administrators to provide conducive learning environments, qualified teachers, and modern teaching materials.

Alao emphasized the importance of mathematics in addressing real-life problems, such as health issues and resource management. He cited research on the role of blood viscosity in sickle cell anemia and the strategic use of mathematics in World War II.
The professor encouraged parents to support their children who are interested in studying mathematics, quoting Shakuntala Devi, “Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics”.
Professor Alao’s lecture highlighted the significance of mathematics in human existence, tracing its roots to biblical accounts of creation. He urged the government to harness mathematical tools in strategic planning for national development.
The Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, described Professor Alao as an authority in his field, who has produced numerous graduates who are making significant contributions to society.
The lecture was attended by members of the university community, scholars, and students, who were treated to an insightful exploration of mathematics and its relevance to everyday life.
