The House of Representatives has expressed strong condemnation of the Federal Ministry of Education’s decision to remove core subjects including Computer Studies, Data Processing, Civic Education, and others from the WAEC portal. This decision has sparked widespread concern among students, educators, and the general public.
The removal of these subjects comes at a time when Nigeria is pushing for digitalization, making the decision to remove Computer Studies and Data Processing particularly worrying. Critics argue that this move is counterproductive to the country’s digital goals and will hinder the development of essential skills among Nigerian youth.
The decision to remove these core subjects from the WAEC portal comes just four months before the 2026 WASSCE, leaving thousands of students scrambling to adjust to the changes. Many students are now facing the possibility of having fewer than the required eight subjects to sit for the exam, which could have serious implications for their academic futures.
The House of Representatives argues that this “curriculum review” is a national disaster in the making. They are calling for immediate action to rescind the decision and restore the removed subjects to the WAEC portal. The lawmakers believe that the decision to remove these subjects was made without adequate consultation with stakeholders and without considering the potential consequences for students.
The removal of Computer Studies and Data Processing from the WAEC portal is seen as educational sabotage by many. These subjects are essential for equipping Nigerian youth with the skills needed to compete in the digital economy. By removing them from the WAEC portal, the Federal Ministry of Education is potentially denying thousands of students the opportunity to acquire these critical skills.
The House of Representatives is demanding that the Federal Ministry of Education provide a clear explanation for the decision to remove these core subjects from the WAEC portal. They are also calling for the ministry to restore the subjects immediately and ensure that students are not disadvantaged by the decision.
In a statement, the House of Representatives said, “We cannot sit silently while students’ futures are sacrificed on the altar of bureaucracy. This isn’t reform, it’s a national disaster in the making. Why is the education system always fighting the children it’s supposed to serve? Nigeria deserves better.”
The lawmakers are urging Nigerians to join them in demanding that the Federal Ministry of Education reverse its decision to remove core subjects from the WAEC portal. They emphasize that the future of Nigeria’s education system depends on prioritizing students’ needs and ensuring that they have access to quality education.
The Federal Ministry of Education has been urged to reconsider its decision and restore the removed subjects to the WAEC portal. The ministry has also been called upon to engage with stakeholders to ensure that any future changes to the curriculum are made with adequate consultation and consideration for the potential consequences.
The House of Representatives has vowed to continue to monitor the situation and ensure that the Federal Ministry of Education takes immediate action to address the concerns raised. They are committed to safeguarding the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring that they receive the quality education they deserve.
In conclusion, the House of Representatives’ demand for the reversal of the Federal Ministry of Education’s decision to remove core subjects from the WAEC portal is a crucial step towards ensuring that Nigerian students have access to quality education. The future of Nigeria’s education system depends on prioritizing students’ needs and making informed decisions that benefit the country’s youth.
