The Management, Staff, and Students of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, on Tuesday marked the 88th birthday of their Chancellor, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (Rtd), describing him as a national figure whose contributions to education, philanthropy, and national development continue to leave a lasting impact.
In a statement issued by the university, the institution praised the former Chief of Army Staff for what it called his “exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment to human development, and remarkable support” for Redeemer’s University. The university noted that Danjuma’s role as Chancellor has strengthened its academic growth, infrastructural development, and global reputation.
General Danjuma, a recipient of the national honour of GCON, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential elder statesmen and philanthropists. Through his TY Danjuma Foundation and other initiatives, he has supported education, healthcare, and humanitarian causes across the country, earning recognition locally and internationally.
The university highlighted his dedication to peacebuilding, discipline, and national service, describing him as a leader whose life continues to inspire both the university community and the wider Nigerian society. It added that his contributions reflect a rare blend of patriotism, generosity, and visionary leadership.
“As our Chancellor marks another remarkable milestone, Redeemer’s University acknowledges his profound impact on the institution and the nation,” the statement read. “His belief in quality education and national progress remains a guiding force for our community.”
The institution also expressed prayers for his continued good health, strength, and fulfilment as he advances in age, noting that his legacy would continue to shape the university’s mission and outlook.
The 88th birthday celebration comes at a time when the university is expanding its academic programmes and strengthening its research base—efforts the management attributes in part to Danjuma’s long-standing support and commitment to excellence.
General Danjuma has served as Chancellor of Redeemer’s University since 2015, and his tenure has been marked by increased donor support, scholarship opportunities, and stronger engagement between the university and national stakeholders.
The university community is expected to hold internal commemorative activities in honour of the Chancellor’s milestone, although no formal ceremony was announced as of press time.
His birthday has also drawn tributes from education leaders, public officials, and development partners who described him as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public figures whose influence continues to shape key sectors of the country.
With his decades-long record of military service, philanthropy, and nation-building, General Danjuma remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s public life one whose legacy Redeemer’s University says it is proud to celebrate.
