Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday inaugurated the newly appointed Chairman and members of the Lagos State University Governing Council, marking what the state government described as a renewed commitment to strengthening governance and academic standards at the institution. The ceremony took place at Lagos House, Ikeja, with top government officials and university administrators in attendance.
In a statement released on his official Facebook page, the governor emphasised that Lagos State University (LASU) occupies a critical position in shaping the future of young people and advancing the state’s academic standing nationwide. He reiterated his confidence in the newly constituted council, noting that strong, focused, and ethical leadership remains essential to the university’s continued rise.
“I shared my confidence in their ability to guide the university with integrity, focus, and a clear commitment to excellence,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that the expectations placed on the council reflect the government’s broader education development agenda.
The event drew several senior state functionaries, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Olabode Agoro; and Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule. Their presence, officials said, underscored the administration’s unified approach to strengthening governance in the state’s tertiary institutions.
Also in attendance were the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and other principal university officers who congratulated the new council members and expressed readiness to collaborate with them on major institutional reforms.
Governor Sanwo-Olu used the occasion to personally congratulate Babatunde Ogala, SAN, on his appointment as Chairman of the Governing Council. Ogala, alongside other newly appointed members such as Remi Desalu, took the oath of office at the ceremony. The governor noted that their appointments came at a crucial moment when LASU is consolidating its status as one of Nigeria’s leading public universities.
In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the responsibility placed on the new council to strengthen academic excellence, expand research output, and improve the overall quality of governance within the institution. He stressed that the council’s strategic decisions would play a defining role in determining the university’s trajectory over the next few years.
“I look forward to the progress ahead and to the continued growth of LASU as a leading institution in Nigeria and beyond,” the governor added, expressing optimism that the council would drive initiatives that align with global standards and meet the aspirations of staff, students, and the wider academic community.
According to the state government, the new Governing Council is expected to oversee major reforms aimed at improving educational quality, enhancing research competitiveness, boosting infrastructure, and strengthening student welfare. The administration also noted that the council will work closely with university management to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and promote sustainable institutional development.
The inauguration comes at a time when Lagos continues to invest heavily in its educational institutions, with officials describing the new council as a key component of efforts to reposition LASU for stronger national and international visibility.
