The Federal University of Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, is enveloped in grief following the tragic death of Favour, a 200-level Biotechnology student, who succumbed to a snakebite on Thursday night, December 18, 2025. The incident, which occurred at Itakeate Isao, has left the university community in profound sorrow, with students and staff mourning the loss of a promising young scholar.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of FUL Lokoja confirmed the incident through a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Baye, describing the event as a painful and devastating blow to the university community. “With deep pain and heavy hearts, we sadly announce the passing of Favour, a 200 Level student of Biotechnology,” the statement read.
According to details gathered by The Nigeria Education News, Favour was bitten by a snake under circumstances still under discussion within the university. She was immediately rushed to Isanlu General Hospital for urgent medical attention but tragically did not survive despite efforts to save her life. “It was gathered that she was bitten by a snake on Thursday night and was immediately rushed to the Isanlu General Hospital for urgent treatment. Sadly, despite all efforts, she could not survive and passed on,” the SUG statement added.
The Nigeria Education News reached out to some students of FUL Lokoja, who confirmed the incident and expressed their shock and sadness over the loss. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We are all in mourning,” said a 300-level student of the Department of Microbiology.
The SUG has extended condolences to Favour’s family, friends, and classmates, acknowledging that her untimely demise leaves a void that will be deeply felt across the campus. “This loss is heartbreaking and difficult to accept. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and coursemates during this moment of grief,” the statement noted.
The union urged students to remain calm and offer mutual support during this period of mourning. Additionally, the SUG called on the university management and relevant authorities to address safety concerns in and around student residential areas to prevent such tragedies in the future. “We implore the university management and relevant authorities to pay attention to safety concerns within and around student residential areas,” the statement emphasized.
