The Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Professor Haruna Musa, fsi, on Thursday, January 1, 2026, officially commissioned an ultra-modern 7-Aside Futsal facility. The project, constructed by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), BUK branch, has been named after the University’s 7th Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu.
Describing the facility as more than just a sporting infrastructure, Professor Musa whose remarks were delivered by the Registrar stated that the project represents SSANU’s foresight, unity, and a concrete commitment to staff welfare. He praised the union’s leadership for their prudent management of resources, noting that the initiative aligns with the University’s vision of promoting a healthy and thriveable work environment.
The decision to name the facility after the current Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, was a strategic move by SSANU to honor his transformative leadership during his previous tenure as the association’s Chairman.
In an emotional response, Malam Haruna Aliyu expressed his gratitude, describing the honor as overwhelming. “This is a reflection of SSANU’s culture of appreciation,” he remarked, pledging his continued support to the union while urging members to sustain their cooperation with the current university administration.

The project has already drawn national attention. The Chairman of the Sports Consultative Committee and Technical Director of the Nigerian University Games (NUGA), Professor Musa Garba Yakasai, described the court as the best of its kind among Nigerian universities.
Professor Yakasai revealed that negotiations are underway with fintech giant Moniepoint to host a national university futsal competition at the new facility.
Furthermore, the Director of Sports, Professor Rabiu Mohammed, noted the timing of the commissioning as “record-breaking.” With Futsal recently added to the roster for the upcoming 2026 NUGA Games at the University of Calabar, BUK students will utilize this new facility as their primary training ground.
The project was executed under a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) arrangement with S Square, led by Executive Director Saifullahi Sanka. The SSANU Chairman, Comrade Mustapha Aminu, noted that the facility would not only enhance staff health and security around the Sports Complex but also add significant aesthetic value to the university landscape.
Among the dignitaries present was the National Vice-President of SSANU (North-West), Comrade Sabo Balarabe Wudil, who represented the National President and praised the synergistic relationship between the BUK management and the staff union.
