A nursing student, Stella Joseph, has been detained by the Niger State Police Command following the unexpected death of Otori Abdulfatai Aiyede, a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida. The incident occurred on January 27, 2026, when the deceased visited Stella Joseph at her home on Niteco Road, Tunga, Minna.
According to reports, the lecturer had traveled from Bida to Minna to visit Stella Joseph, a nursing student, and was served a meal of spaghetti and egg. Shortly after consuming the food, he allegedly convulsed, collapsed, and was taken to the General Hospital in Minna, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, stating that the police received a report that Abdulfatai Aiyede had come to Minna to visit Stella Joseph, and she allegedly served him food, after which he convulsed and passed away.
There were initial reports that the deceased was a lecturer at Newgate University, Minna, but the institution’s management has denied this. Reliable sources indicate that he was actually a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State.
The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, and Stella Joseph is being detained in connection with the incident. The cause of death is yet to be determined, and an autopsy has likely been ordered to ascertain the exact circumstances of the lecturer’s death.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
