The University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos have emerged among the highest-ranked Nigerian institutions in the QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa 2026 edition.
According to the ranking, the University of Ibadan placed 11th overall in Sub-Saharan Africa with an overall score of 68.8, making it Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the latest assessment. The ranking reflects strong performance in academic reputation, citations per paper and research output.
The University of Lagos followed closely, ranking 15th with an overall score of 64.3. The institution recorded notable scores in citations per paper and academic reputation, highlighting its growing research influence and visibility within the region.
Also featured among Nigerian institutions is the University of Nigeria Nsukka, which performed strongly in papers per faculty and academic reputation indicators, further reinforcing Nigeria’s presence in the top tier of the regional ranking.
Private institutions were not left out, as Covenant University also appeared in the top 20 list, reflecting the increasing contribution of privately owned universities to research and academic development in the region.
The QS Sub-Saharan Africa rankings assess universities using indicators such as academic reputation, research productivity, citations, and faculty output. The 2026 edition is the first comprehensive regional ranking covering 69 institutions across multiple African countries.
At the continental level, the University of Cape Town emerged as the highest-ranked university in Sub-Saharan Africa, underscoring South Africa’s continued dominance in higher education performance.
QS noted that the diversity of institutions in the top 20 demonstrates that academic excellence in Sub-Saharan Africa is not confined to a single country, with Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa all recording strong representation.
