The Edo State Police Command has taken into custody students allegedly involved in a bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre, following public outrage triggered by a viral video of the assault.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed that investigations had led to the identification and arrest of all those connected to the incident.
She noted that the suspects would be prosecuted at a family court in accordance with existing laws on juvenile justice and child protection.
The spokesperson also revealed that the Commissioner of Police has ordered the expansion of the Operation Safe Schools initiative across secondary schools in the state to address gaps in supervision and enhance student safety.
In addition, the Command has activated its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices to carry out awareness and sensitisation programmes among students and school administrators.
The police assured residents that necessary steps are being taken to ensure accountability while also putting measures in place to prevent a recurrence, urging the public to remain calm as the process unfolds.
The arrests come days after a video circulated online showing two students attacking a fellow student, who was seen being physically assaulted while lying on the ground. The incident sparked widespread condemnation, prompting the school to expel those involved and the state government to demand their prosecution.
