The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Comrade Ochuba Chukwusom Samuel, was allegedly attacked on Wednesday afternoon by operatives of the Udogachi Vigilante Group, sparking protests by students.
A video circulating on social media shows the SUG president lying on the ground while men believed to be members of the vigilante group assault him. Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. within the university community.
An emergency message reportedly circulated among students described the attack as retaliation for the SUG president’s advocacy on issues affecting students.
“The worst has happened. Our SUG President has been brutally beaten by the Udogachi Vigilante Group while standing and fighting for the rights of UNIZIK students,” the message read in part, adding that there was also an alleged attempt to shoot him.
Following the incident, students reportedly mobilised and gathered at Aroma Junction, staging a protest to demand accountability and protection for their elected representatives.
The protest temporarily disrupted traffic in the area as demonstrators blocked parts of the road while expressing anger over the alleged assault.
As of the time of filing this report, university authorities and security agencies had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the protest.
Further developments are expected as students continue to demand clarification and action from relevant authorities.
