Fresh students of Trinity University, Yaba have been equipped with practical strategies for navigating the complexities of university life, following a thought-provoking lecture delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Joseph Ayodele. The lecture formed part of activities marking the institution’s 8th matriculation ceremony, where over 700 students were formally admitted into various academic programmes.
Speaking as the guest lecturer, Professor Ayodele addressed the theme, “Coping with the Challenges of University Education in Nigeria: The Role of Psycho-Social Adjustment,” emphasising that while academic and social pressures are inevitable, students possess the capacity to overcome them with the right mindset and support systems. He reassured the new entrants that their challenges, though real, are not insurmountable.
Drawing from both personal experience and academic insight, the professor noted that university life presents a wide range of challenges beyond academics, including financial constraints, emotional stress, peer pressure, and mental health concerns. He stressed that these issues are not peculiar to any single generation, but vary across institutions and individual circumstances.
Professor Ayodele highlighted the importance of psychological adjustment as a key survival tool in higher education. According to him, students who develop emotional awareness and resilience are better positioned to manage stress, build meaningful relationships, and adapt to the demands of academic and social life.
He urged students to adopt healthy coping mechanisms such as effective time management, disciplined study habits, and seeking help when necessary. He emphasised that there should be no stigma in reaching out for support, whether academically, emotionally, or psychologically, as doing so contributes to overall well-being and success.
The EKSU Vice-Chancellor also cautioned students about the influence of peer groups, advising them to be intentional about their associations. He warned that negative influences could derail academic focus, but maintained that with determination and clarity of purpose, students can rise above any challenge they encounter.
Earlier in his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Trinity University, Pastor S. O. Olatunji, encouraged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities available within the institution. He described the university as a platform for holistic development, encompassing academic, spiritual, and extracurricular growth.
Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, C. O. O. Kolawole, described matriculation as the beginning of a transformative journey into scholarship and personal development. He urged students to uphold discipline, respect institutional rules, and manage their time effectively, noting that success in university life is largely determined by how well students utilise their time and opportunities.
