The Lagos State Government has begun moves to introduce a unified academic calendar for all primary and secondary schools, signalling a shift toward greater coordination in the state’s education system.
The process, led by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), kicked off with a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ikeja, where education leaders gathered to shape the 2026/2027 school calendar.
Speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, said the proposed calendar would be binding on both public and private schools across the state.
He explained that the move is designed to bring uniformity to instructional days, holidays, and examination periods, while improving overall learning outcomes through better planning and coordination.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, represented by Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oyedele, noted that a harmonised calendar would support long-term planning and ensure stability within the school system.
Also speaking, the Director-General of OEQA, Sulaimon Olagoke Ogunmuyiwa, stressed that compliance would be strictly enforced, warning that inconsistencies across schools could undermine quality assurance efforts.
He added that the agency would intensify monitoring and continue implementing its S.C.R.I.P.T.S framework, which focuses on improving standards through capacity building, governance, collaboration, and technology.
Earlier, Mrs. Evelyn Pelemo, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at OEQA, described the meeting as the foundation stage of the calendar development process, aimed at gathering practical input and addressing emerging challenges in the education sector.
Stakeholders at the meeting, including representatives from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), West African Examinations Council, and other education bodies, welcomed the initiative, noting that a unified calendar would create a more structured and predictable academic experience for students, teachers, and parents.
