The Osun State Polytechnic Iree has released detailed operational guidelines ahead of its upcoming semester examinations, introducing a structured framework for the use of mobile devices in its Computer-Based Examination (CBE) system.
According to the Directorate of Examinations, the new system is powered by the Xerxes SIEMS application, which all lecturers, invigilators, and students are required to download and activate before the commencement of examinations. The directive forms part of the institution’s efforts to enhance digital assessment, improve exam integrity, and streamline academic processes.
Students and staff are expected to install or update the application from either the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, complete biometric facial registration, register their courses, and print their examination slips through the platform before the examination period begins.

Under the new arrangement, each candidate will be required to generate a unique QR code specific to each course examination. This code will be scanned by invigilators to generate a device-specific access PIN, which will be delivered directly to students’ mobile devices through app notifications.
The institution explained that the six-digit access PIN will automatically expire within two minutes, emphasizing the need for candidates to act promptly during the examination process. Students are expected to retrieve and input the PIN through the “Load Examination” menu to access their question papers.
Invigilators have also been assigned enhanced monitoring responsibilities, including the use of QR code scanners to detect impersonation and ensure compliance with examination rules. The system is designed to strengthen identity verification and reduce cases of malpractice during assessments.
The polytechnic further stated that only one mobile device—either a smartphone or tablet—will be permitted per student in the examination hall. All other smart devices, spy gadgets, or unauthorized materials are strictly prohibited, with confiscated items subject to severe disciplinary action.
Management warned that any device-related malpractice or violation of examination rules would attract sanctions, including possible referral to the Students’ Examination Disciplinary Committee. It also noted that impersonation or questionable biometric registration results would be thoroughly investigated.
In cases of technical disruptions such as server or network failure lasting more than one hour, examinations will be rescheduled to ensure fairness and continuity.
The institution urged students to familiarize themselves with the application ahead of the examinations and seek assistance where necessary, stressing that the success of the system depends on proper understanding and compliance by all stakeholders.
With the introduction of the mobile-based CBT system, Osun State Polytechnic Iree joins a growing number of institutions adopting digital platforms to modernize assessment processes and curb examination malpractice in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
