The Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade James Adio, has been reinstated following weeks of controversy and sustained intervention by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, popularly known as Babtee, announced the development on Wednesday through a post on X.
“Finally, Comrade Adio, the FUOYE SUG President, has been officially reinstated,” he wrote.
The reinstatement comes after a series of engagements between the national student body and the university management over disciplinary actions taken against Adio and other affected students.
Earlier, Babatunde had disclosed that the university’s Senate would review the matter during its meeting on June 24, expressing confidence that the student leader would receive fair consideration.
“The University Senate will convene on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, to give Comrade James Adio fair consideration and the necessary support that will serve both the interest of justice and his academic pursuits going forward,” he had stated.
According to NANS, the discussions also led to the reinstatement of other affected students, who were subsequently allowed to participate in their examinations.
Adio was suspended alongside two other students over alleged financial irregularities linked to practical fees, a decision that drew criticism from NANS, which argued that due process should be followed in handling matters involving elected student leaders.
The case attracted widespread attention within the student community and beyond, with debates centring on student representation, disciplinary procedures and the rights of union leaders within tertiary institutions.
With his reinstatement now confirmed, attention is expected to shift to the outcome of ongoing reviews surrounding the issues that led to the suspension.
