The Department of Political Science and International Relations at Augustine University has called on Nigerian youths to become active participants in governance, democratic processes, and national development as part of efforts to build a more accountable and progressive society.
The call was made during the department’s inaugural Departmental Day held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the university’s Convocation Hall, where students, lecturers, administrators, and invited guests gathered for intellectual discussions centred on youth participation in nation building.
The event served as a platform for students to engage in conversations surrounding governance, leadership, political responsibility, and the future role of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s democratic institutions.
Delivering the keynote address, Prince Ademola Adetola stressed the importance of youth involvement in politics and governance, noting that sustainable national development cannot be achieved without the active contribution of young people.
Speaking on the theme “The Role of Youth in Nation Building and Political Participation,” Adetola encouraged students to remain politically aware, informed about national issues, and committed to contributing positively to society.
According to him, the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the willingness of young citizens to move beyond criticism and actively participate in leadership, policy discussions, and civic responsibilities.
He explained that youths possess the energy, creativity, and innovative capacity required to strengthen democratic institutions and address many of the socio-political challenges confronting the country.
Adetola also urged students to embrace peaceful political engagement, community service, and responsible citizenship while avoiding apathy and disconnection from governance processes.
“The role of young people in nation building cannot be overemphasised. Youths must remain informed, actively participate in political processes, and contribute meaningfully to societal progress,” he said.
The event attracted notable members of the university community, including the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, Prof. Grace Evbuomwan, and the Director of Operations, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Ogundele.
Also present was the Coordinator of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Dr. Dare Akindoyin, alongside other academic staff and students of the institution.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions during the programme, with students sharing opinions on political participation, leadership challenges, governance accountability, and the role of education in promoting democratic consciousness among youths.
Many students described the programme as timely, noting that it provided valuable insight into the importance of civic engagement and responsible leadership in contemporary Nigeria.
The Departmental Day later ended on a relaxed and social atmosphere with a picnic session organised to promote interaction, networking, and stronger relationships among students and staff members of the department.
