The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), has paid tribute to Jim Ovia following his retirement as Group Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, describing his career as one that connects financial leadership with long-term national development, including education.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Fund said Ovia’s exit marks the close of a defining era in Nigeria’s banking sector, noting that his leadership helped shape one of Africa’s most recognised financial institutions.
NELFUND highlighted that beyond corporate achievements, Ovia’s contributions to education and youth development align with ongoing efforts to expand access to higher education through structured financing.
According to the statement, his approach to institution-building, anchored on innovation, governance, and resilience, has had a lasting impact not just on banking but on broader economic growth.
Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, said Ovia’s legacy goes beyond the institution he built, describing it as deeply connected to Nigeria’s economic advancement and human capital development.
He added that the Fund draws inspiration from Ovia’s belief in education as a driver of national progress, especially at a time when access to funding remains critical for students.
NELFUND also noted that Ovia’s influence has contributed to strengthening trust and credibility in Nigeria’s financial system, creating pathways that indirectly support initiatives such as student financing and educational investment.
The organisation wished him success in his next phase, expressing confidence that his experience will continue to shape conversations around leadership, mentorship, and development in Nigeria and beyond.
