President Bola Tinubu has appointed Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, succeeding Prof. Ishaq Oloyede whose tenure is expected to end on July 31, 2026.
The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, Aina, who will turn 40 in July, is a renowned scholar in Computer Engineering and one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in the field, with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination systems, and institutional reforms.
The statement described him as a systems expert with more than 15 years of professional experience advising federal and state governments on digital transition, public sector reforms, and technology-driven institutional development.
“Professor Aina, who will be 40 in July, is a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform,” the statement read.
The Presidency also noted that the appointment marks a historic moment for the examination body, as Aina is set to become the youngest registrar in the history of JAMB.
Aina currently serves as a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University and is widely recognized for his expertise in digital systems, examination integrity, and educational technology.
His academic background includes a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, as well as a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.
He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School, further strengthening his administrative and leadership credentials.
According to the statement, Aina has previously worked with major examination bodies in Nigeria, including the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, where he served as a consultant on ICT systems and examination integrity frameworks.
The Presidency further highlighted his membership in several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Aina’s ability to sustain and improve the reforms introduced under the outgoing registrar, particularly in areas of digital transformation, transparency, and examination management.
“President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the Board, to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor,” the statement added.
The appointment has already generated reactions within academic and educational circles, with many observers describing it as a significant move toward strengthening technology-driven reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.
