The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has renewed its call for the immediate rescue of students and teachers abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, expressing concern that 55 days after the incident, the victims remain in captivity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the student body described the prolonged captivity as both tragic and traumatic, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of those still being held.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the continued detention of the victims was unacceptable, stressing that students and teachers should not be abandoned while armed groups continue to operate with impunity.
The association noted that since the abduction, it has consistently advocated for the victims’ rescue while engaging with the Oyo State Government, visiting the affected community, and meeting with families and local stakeholders to explore ways of supporting ongoing security efforts.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Federal Government and security agencies, NANS maintained that more decisive action is needed to end the ordeal of the abducted students and teachers.
According to the association, the continued captivity of the victims highlights the urgent need to strengthen security around schools and protect learners across the country.
NANS also called for improved measures to safeguard educational institutions nationwide, warning that attacks on schools threaten not only the lives of students and teachers but also the future of education in Nigeria.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare and security of Nigerian students, insisting that the rescue of the victims should remain a national priority.
