Academic excellence took centre stage at the 2026 Call to Bar ceremony as Israel Adekunle Adeniyi, a graduate of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), emerged the Overall Best Graduating Student of the Nigerian Law School, crowning an outstanding academic journey that has earned him national recognition and a ₦2 million reward for excellence.
Adeniyi, an indigene of Offa in Kwara State, completed his Bar Part II programme at the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School, where he distinguished himself above thousands of aspiring lawyers from across the country to earn the institution’s highest academic honour.
His latest accomplishment marks the culmination of years of exceptional academic performance, having earlier graduated as the Best Graduating Student in the Common Law programme at the University of Ilorin with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.83, the highest ever recorded in the history of the university’s Faculty of Law.
The achievement has been widely celebrated within the legal and academic communities, with education stakeholders describing Adeniyi’s success as a shining example of the rewards of discipline, consistency and hard work.
Confirming the development, the University of Ilorin Law Students’ Society congratulated Adeniyi in a statement shared on X, describing his emergence as the Nigerian Law School’s best graduating student as a remarkable accomplishment that would continue to inspire both current and prospective law students.
The association stated that his academic journey reflects the culture of excellence for which the university’s Faculty of Law has become known, adding that his success demonstrates what dedication and resilience can achieve. The recognition did not end with the prestigious national honour.
In celebration of his outstanding performance, the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation presented Adeniyi with a ₦2 million cash award, following a dinner hosted in his honour by former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
According to the foundation, the award was presented in recognition of Adeniyi’s exceptional academic performance, discipline and unwavering commitment to excellence throughout his university education and professional legal training.
“Our Founder, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, hosted Israel Adekunle Adeniyi for dinner following his excellent feat as the Overall Best Graduating Student of the Nigerian Law School at the just concluded 2026 Call to Bar Ceremony.
“Prior to this great feat, he emerged as the Best Graduating Student from the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin.
“In recognition of his outstanding performance, discipline and unwavering commitment to excellence, the ABS Foundation presented him with a ₦2,000,000 award,” the foundation said in a statement.
The foundation further noted that celebrating excellence remains central to its mission of encouraging exceptional young Nigerians to pursue academic and professional distinction.
Education experts have described Adeniyi’s feat as particularly remarkable because the Nigerian Law School represents the final and most demanding stage of legal education in the country.
Unlike undergraduate law programmes, the Nigerian Law School focuses on intensive vocational and practical legal training, equipping graduates with competencies in advocacy, legal drafting, civil and criminal litigation, ethics and professional practice before they are admitted to the Nigerian Bar.
Only candidates who successfully complete the programme and satisfy the requirements of the Council of Legal Education are eligible to participate in the Call to Bar ceremony and practise as legal practitioners in Nigeria.
Adeniyi’s achievement also adds to the University of Ilorin’s growing reputation for academic excellence in legal education.
Earlier this year, the institution announced that 16 of its graduates earned First Class honours in the Nigerian Law School Bar Final Examinations the highest number ever recorded by the university further reinforcing its status as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions for legal studies.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), had described the institution’s impressive performance at the Bar Finals as evidence of sustained investment in quality teaching, modern learning facilities and effective academic leadership.
He noted that the university remains committed to producing graduates capable of competing at both national and international levels while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
For many students across Nigerian universities, Adeniyi’s story has become an inspiring reminder that excellence is achievable through dedication, resilience and consistency.
His emergence as the country’s overall best law graduate not only celebrates individual brilliance but also highlights the critical role universities, professional institutions and mentorship play in nurturing future leaders within Nigeria’s legal profession.
As the newly called lawyer begins the next phase of his career, education stakeholders believe his remarkable journey from the University of Ilorin to becoming the Nigerian Law School’s highest-performing graduate will continue to inspire young Nigerians to pursue academic excellence and professional integrity in their chosen fields.
