Findings have revealed that the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has added another success story to its growing list of internationally recognised alumni as one of its graduates, Dr. Oyefunmilayo Amoda, earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nutrition from Oregon State University, Corvallis, United States, and has been appointed an Assistant Professor at an American university.
The Nigeria Education News gathered that Dr. Amoda’s academic journey reflects the increasing global competitiveness of Nigerian university graduates, particularly those who combine academic excellence with research experience at the undergraduate level.
Investigations showed that Dr. Amoda graduated from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at FUNAAB in 2021 with First Class Honours, emerging as the overall Best Graduating Student in her department. During her undergraduate studies, she distinguished herself through exceptional academic performance while actively participating in research projects under the guidance of senior academics within the University.
Further findings indicate that her early exposure to research enabled her to contribute to several peer-reviewed scientific publications that addressed important public health concerns. Her studies examined issues relating to adolescent nutrition in secondary schools within Abeokuta as well as micronutrient adequacy among civil servants in Ogun State, contributing to evidence-based discussions on nutrition and public health in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Education News learnt that her strong academic record and research portfolio earned her direct admission into a fully funded doctoral programme at Oregon State University. Remarkably, she secured admission without the conventional requirements of a Master’s degree, Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or an application fee waiver, reflecting the strength of her academic credentials and research potential.
In addition to the fully funded doctoral admission, Dr. Amoda received the highly competitive Provost Distinguished Scholarship, an award reserved for doctoral candidates with exceptional academic promise and research capacity. Throughout her doctoral studies, she also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, combining teaching responsibilities with advanced research and scholarly activities.
Her doctoral research focused on the epidemiological relationship between nutritional factors and hypertension, an area of growing global health concern. The study produced several publications in internationally recognised nutrition journals, while additional research manuscripts are currently undergoing peer review for publication.
Investigations further revealed that following the successful completion of her doctoral programme, Dr. Amoda accepted an appointment as an Assistant Professor at a university in the United States, where she is expected to commence her academic career in the Fall 2026 semester. In her new role, she will engage in teaching, research and mentorship while contributing to advancements in nutrition science and public health.
Education analysts say her achievement underscores the increasing visibility of Nigerian-trained graduates within the international academic community.
