A Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard University graduate, Yinka Ogunbiyi, has gained international recognition after developing HaloBraid, described as the world’s first braid-assist robotic system designed to support professional hairstylists by reducing the time and physical effort required for braiding while preserving the artistry of the profession.
The innovation has already attracted significant global attention, securing $7 million in seed funding from investors and drawing interest from more than 7,000 professional salons awaiting its commercial rollout. The achievement has also placed another Nigerian innovator on the global technology map, demonstrating how African talent continues to influence advancements in engineering and artificial intelligence.
According to information released by the United States Mission in Nigeria, HaloBraid was created to address one of the biggest challenges faced by professional braiders—repetitive hand, wrist and back movements that often lead to fatigue and long-term physical strain. Rather than replacing hairstylists, the robotic system is intended to work alongside them by automating the most repetitive section of the braiding process.
Investigations show that the hairstylist remains responsible for preparing the client’s hair by sectioning it and creating the initial anchor braid. Once this is completed, the HaloBraid device performs the repetitive mid-length braiding before the stylist returns to finish, trim and seal the hairstyle according to the client’s preference. This collaborative approach enables professionals to complete appointments more efficiently without sacrificing quality.
Ogunbiyi conceived the idea during the COVID-19 pandemic after spending several days installing her own knotless braids. The experience exposed the physically demanding nature of the process and inspired her to seek a technological solution. She subsequently partnered with co-founder David Afolabi to transform the concept into a commercially viable product through extensive research, engineering and prototype development.
Her academic background combines engineering and business, having earned a joint Master of Science and Master of Business Administration from Harvard’s Engineering School and Harvard Business School. Before founding HaloBraid, she worked on connected consumer electronics and smart home technologies, experience that later informed the development of the robotic braiding assistant.
The startup’s funding round was led by venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, with additional backing from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital. The investment is expected to accelerate manufacturing, expand product deployment and meet growing demand from salons seeking technology that improves productivity while protecting the health of professional stylists.
Responding to concerns that automation could diminish the cultural significance of African hair braiding, Ogunbiyi explained that the technology was never intended to replace human creativity. Instead, she maintained that HaloBraid simply removes the repetitive motions that consume most of the appointment time, allowing hairstylists to focus on the artistic and personalised aspects of their craft.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission also celebrated Ogunbiyi’s accomplishment, describing the invention as another example of the remarkable contributions Nigerians continue to make in science, technology and innovation across the world.
The breakthrough further highlights the growing role of African innovators in developing technologies that solve practical problems while creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship, advanced manufacturing and technology-driven economic growth.
