Ondo State Government has accelerated its digital transformation agenda in public secondary schools with the rollout of technology-driven learning initiatives across 50 schools, accompanied by intensive training programmes for teachers to strengthen digital literacy and classroom instruction.
The Nigeria Education News gathered that the initiative forms part of the state’s broader strategy to modernise teaching and learning by integrating digital technologies into classroom activities and equipping both educators and students with skills required for the rapidly evolving knowledge economy. The programme was highlighted during the grand finale of the fourth edition of the Ondo State Digital Quiz Competition held in Akure.
Investigations indicate that the state government, through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, has commenced a sustained capacity-building programme for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teachers in public secondary schools. The training, conducted in collaboration with technical partners, is designed to ensure that teachers acquire practical digital competencies that can be transferred to students during classroom instruction.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, explained that the digital education initiative is a continuous exercise rather than a one-time intervention. According to him, ICT teachers recently underwent a week-long specialised training programme, building on similar exercises that began last year as part of the state’s long-term education reform agenda.
Further findings showed that no fewer than 50 public secondary schools have already been equipped with computers and other digital learning facilities supplied through partnerships between the state government and private technology organisations. The equipment is expected to improve access to technology-based instruction and support the implementation of digital learning across participating schools.
The Nigeria Education News also learnt that the Digital Quiz Competition was organised to encourage students to develop technological competencies while promoting innovation, critical thinking and healthy academic competition. Education officials noted that the initiative is intended to prepare learners for future careers in an increasingly technology-driven global environment.
According to the state government, the digitalisation programme extends beyond the provision of computers and ICT facilities. It also focuses on strengthening teaching methodologies, enhancing digital literacy among students and creating a learning environment where technology becomes an integral component of classroom instruction.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Akindele Ige, described the competition as a platform for nurturing creativity, problem-solving abilities and digital competence among young learners. He maintained that initiatives of this nature would better prepare students for higher education and future employment opportunities in a digital economy.
Education analysts observe that Ondo State’s investment in digital infrastructure and teacher development reflects the growing emphasis being placed on technology-enabled learning across Nigeria. They note that while the provision of digital equipment is important, continuous teacher training and curriculum integration remain essential to ensuring that such investments translate into improved learning outcomes and greater student preparedness for the demands of the 21st-century workforce.
