The Enugu State Government has approved the recruitment of 6,580 teachers and school support personnel into the state’s public primary and junior secondary schools, a move aimed at strengthening classroom instruction and supporting the operation of its expanding Smart Green Schools initiative.
The approval, granted by Governor Peter Mbah, forms part of the administration’s broader education reform agenda, which seeks to improve learning outcomes by ensuring that schools are adequately staffed with qualified teaching and non-teaching personnel. According to the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), the recruitment exercise is designed to provide the human resources required to sustain quality education across the state.
A breakdown of the vacancies shows that the largest share of the positions—4,698—is reserved for teachers in core subject areas, including Mathematics, English Language, Basic Science, Basic Technology, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), French, Igbo Language and History. The recruitment is expected to help reduce teacher shortages while improving subject delivery in public schools.
Beyond classroom teachers, the state is also seeking professionals for several specialised roles. These include 520 digital librarians, 380 experiential learning innovators, 267 guidance counsellors, 267 ICT officers, 267 laboratory attendants, 136 account officers, and 45 technicians. The diversity of the advertised positions reflects the government’s intention to build schools that combine academic excellence with digital learning, technical support and effective administration.
Education observers note that the recruitment aligns with Enugu State’s ongoing investment in Smart Green Schools—technology-driven learning centres designed to equip pupils with twenty-first century skills through digital education, innovation and experiential learning. The additional workforce is expected to play a critical role in ensuring the effective operation of these schools across the state.
The ENSUBEB vacancy notice also outlines the eligibility requirements for applicants. Candidates applying with a university degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) must possess a valid National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge or exemption certificate, while practical knowledge of ICT tools is mandatory across all categories of employment. The board explained that digital competence has become essential because of the state’s emphasis on technology-enabled teaching and school administration.
Interested applicants are required to submit a formal application letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of academic credentials, a birth certificate or sworn declaration of age, and valid contact details. Applications may be submitted physically to the office of the Executive Chairman of ENSUBEB or electronically as a single PDF document through the designated application channel. The board stressed that the recruitment process is completely free of charge and warned applicants against falling victim to fraudsters demanding payment. The deadline for applications is Friday, August 14, 2026.
