Academic activities and preparations for a new school session at King’s College, Lagos, have been thrown into uncertainty following the shutdown of the historic institution by its staff union over the Federal Government’s decision to concession the school to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association.
The development comes after the Federal Ministry of Education directed the immediate commencement of the handover process, following the conclusion of arrangements for the concession of the 116-year-old Federal Government College to its alumni association.
The closure has now raised concerns among parents and students, with the planned resumption of students uncertain.
According to reports, the Federal Ministry of Education, in a letter dated September 4, 2026, confirmed that the concession agreement had been concluded and directed the immediate implementation of the handover process to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association.
The ministry also directed the constitution of a Transition Committee to oversee the process, which is expected to be completed within six months. At the end of the transition period, Federal Government funding of the institution from the Federation Account is expected to cease.
The Chairman of the King’s College Parent-Teacher Association, Peter Oluwaleye, said the staff union subsequently declared an immediate shutdown of the school, restricting movement into and out of the institution.
He said the situation had created uncertainty over the planned resumption of students, adding that parents would be informed after further consultations on whether the school could reopen as scheduled.
The PTA has, however, urged parents to continue preparing their children for school while awaiting further clarification, particularly on the implications of the concession and transition process.
The development has intensified concerns over the future of one of Nigeria’s most prominent Federal Government Colleges.
Parents have continued to question how the transition would affect students who gained admission into King’s College as a Federal Government-owned institution and are still several years away from completing their education.
The PTA has maintained that students admitted under the existing public education structure should be allowed to complete their education under conditions that protect accessibility and affordability.
The association has also expressed concerns that the concession could result in increased school fees and other charges, potentially making the institution less accessible to children from low-income families.
While stakeholders have opposed aspects of the arrangement, the King’s College Old Boys’ Association has maintained that the concession is not a sale or privatisation of the school. The association described the arrangement as a partnership with the Federal Government aimed at restoring, modernising and sustaining the institution.
The disagreement has also attracted criticism from civil society and labour groups, with concerns raised about the possible impact of the concession on public education, staff welfare and the affordability of Federal Government Colleges.
The situation at King’s College has therefore become more than a management transition. It has reopened a wider national debate about the future of public education, the role of government in funding historic public institutions and the extent to which private or alumni-led partnerships can be introduced without undermining access to quality education.
For parents and students, however, the immediate concern remains whether the school will reopen as planned and how the transition process will affect the academic future of students currently enrolled in the institution.
As consultations continue, the coming days are expected to determine whether King’s College can resume normal academic activities or face further disruption over the controversy surrounding its concession.
