In a significant boost to its international academic reputation, the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has successfully enrolled sixty-seven foreign students from thirteen African nations for the 2024/2025 academic session. This milestone underscores the institution’s commitment to fostering a globally inclusive learning environment and promoting cross-cultural academic collaboration.
According to a statement issued by the institution’s Senior Deputy Registrar (Information and Publications), Abdullahi Abdullahi, the newly admitted students hail from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Niger Republic, Cameroon, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Togo, and Zimbabwe.
These students will be pursuing degrees in a range of disciplines, including Medicine and Surgery, Economics, History and International Studies, Computer Science, Law, Criminology and Security Studies, Nursing, Accounting, Business Management, and Pharmacy.
While welcoming the students, UNIJOS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to reviving and expanding the student exchange programme, a long-standing tradition that has significantly enhanced the university’s international presence.
“Admitting foreign students into the university is a result of the concerted efforts of the university leadership and other key stakeholders. This achievement represents a significant milestone in our vision to maintain and strengthen global academic partnerships,” Professor Ishaya stated.
He further emphasized that all foreign students underwent the same rigorous admission process as their Nigerian counterparts, including sitting for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations and fulfilling other necessary academic requirements.
The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Rochas Foundation College of Africa in encouraging these students to choose UNIJOS for their higher education. He noted that many of the admitted students completed their secondary education at the foundation, which has been instrumental in facilitating educational opportunities for young scholars across Africa.
In his address, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Chris Piwuna, expressed enthusiasm about the inclusion of international students in the UNIJOS academic community. He urged the students to embrace the values of discipline, integrity, and academic excellence as they embark on their studies.
“The university is committed to providing a conducive learning environment for all students, ensuring that they receive the best possible academic and social support. We expect all students to adhere strictly to the institution’s rules and regulations and to uphold the university’s reputation for academic excellence,” Dr. Piwuna stated.
The enrollment of these foreign students marks another significant step in UNIJOS’ mission to expand its reach and influence in global education. The university remains dedicated to fostering a dynamic and multicultural academic community where students from diverse backgrounds can learn, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to knowledge and development.
